Objectives
Introduction to Automation and Control Engineering ; symbolic and numerical analysis and design of single-input-single-output feedback control systems using linear models, implementation of controllers.

Content
Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Purpose , structure and operational principles of feedback as well as feedforward control systems ; PID control ; implementation of controllers  Idea of Multivariable control
2. Modelling and simulation based on ODEs, block diagrams, transfer functions , inverse Laplace transform.  Physical modelling based on material etc. balances, state space models, model concepts  Matlab including Simulink and Control System Toolbox. Matlab programming and documentation of figures.
3. Understanding and description of phenomena associated with stability, stationary responses as well as transient responses using various models. Effects of feedback control.  Analysis using a state-space model. Analysis of non-linear control systems through simulations.
4. Coping with uncertainty: analysis and design of sufficient degree of stability , sensitivity with Bode and Nichols diagrams.  Nyquist diagrams in analysis.
5. Design of step responses using both time domain and frequency domain methods.

Requirements for completing the course
