Course objectives
Training and learning principal techniques and tools in bio-catalysis and enzymology, protein structure, its functions and its role in environmental biotechnology.

Content of the course
This course introduces the student to the role of biocatalysis and enzymes in environmentally relevant processes such as in nutrient mobilization and its cycling, in the degradation of bio- and geopolymers, in detoxification and transformation of pollutants in soil, sediment and water. Measurements, techniques and approaches in enzymology, principles in enzyme kinetics and transformation tools in characterizing enzyme reaction mechanisms. Mechanisms of enzyme induction, repression and derepression. Tracing of biocatalysis in environmentally relevant bioprocesses with chromogenic- and fluorogenic model substrates under in situ conditions. A lab-exercise course will be provided as an intensive course at the end of the lecture period.

Requirements
Written examination and approved exercises.
