Course objectives
The term Complex Systems denotes the newest significant wave of the Systems Science movement, identifying and differentiating itself by its own concepts, philosophy, theories and advocates. Complex systems are ubiquitous, characteristic examples are found in most areas of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Sociology, Management and Economics. In general they cannot be understood by decomposition, as the whole is more than the sum of its parts, i.e. the relationship of the systems constituents to each other - the collective phenomena - is more important than the properties of the individual parts. Therefore the morphing discipline of Complex Systems is involved with systems that evolve, adapt, self-organize and show emergence - mentioning only their most important properties. Powerful computers, the internet, the increasing globalization of the world economy, advances in measurement technology, large amounts of experimental data, phenomena in laser technology and other technological constructions more and more often appear to be complex systems and hence require engineers, scientists and decision makers to respond appropriately. As a response to this acute need the last few decades have brought about the development of theories, methods, software and a discipline of its own to enable designers and managers to gain more understanding and exert more influence on complex systems.

Content of the course
Lectures on Complex Systems is an introductory course devoted to presenting the basics of the discipline from the viewpoint of seven different lecturers. Pauli Rämö, Prof. Marjatta Maula, Dr. Béla Pátkai, Prof. Hannu Koivisto, Full day seminar (open to representatives of industry): Dr. John L. Casti, Complexica Inc.

Requirements
Attendance: Min. 5 of the 7 lectures Course work: Written summary of the lectures and a description of the relevance of Complex Systems in the students own field of study or research.

The course open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
